Life in Gozo is inextricable from the sea
During your first ferry ride to Gozo, keep an eye out for Mario Buttigieg, one of the island’s best-known boat trip operators. Mario begins each day at the crack of dawn, seamlessly transporting people, students, workers, and tourists between the islands. He says there is nothing he likes more than watching the sun rise on Gozo from his boat.
Mario is one of three Gozitan brothers who own Ebson Comino Ferries, a local boat hire company located next to the ferry terminal. He loves the slow pace of life in Gozo, even if he does have an early start.
“Our day starts at 8:00 in the morning,” he says. “We offer ferry trips every hour from Mgarr, Gozo to Comino. Apart from that, we also provide private boat charters and speed boat trips from Valletta to Gozo.”
His favourite thing about this job is that he gets to meet new people every day, and in Gozo, that there are many gregarious personalities from different countries. He says that no matter where you go in Gozo, there are always interesting people to meet—and that’s exciting.
Life in Gozo is peaceful and serene
Another thing Mario loves about Gozo is simply being out at sea.
“What better backdrop could you have?” Mario says. “Being at sea makes you forget your worries, especially when the weather is nice and the waters are calm.”
Mario says that the island is small but is big in different ways. You might not find the major nightclubs that exist across Europe, but you’re also never more than 5 or 10 minutes away from the se. Few other countries, or universities, can claim that.
